Umuzi PRESENTS:
Rise is an exhibition that aims to motivate the South African youth to participate in our country’s political narrative. It celebrates those activists who do contribute towards a more equal society, while challenging apathy and ignorance in our youth. It is the latest in the series of Umuzi’s First Thursdays popup exhibitions. With this Fine Art Product, Umuzi is focussing their efforts on creating an accessible platform for their community members to host solo exhibitions, sell work and expand their networks. What makes this exhibition unique is that it’s not a popup, it will hang for the whole of June. Umuzi is partnering with Play Braamfontein to create a cultural hub at 70 Juta Street that encourages collaboration and creativity in the heart of the city.
This month’s artist, Kgodiso ‘Zito’ Mowa [Umuzi Alumni], is a multifaceted artist from Gamashashane, Limpopo. Like many others, he came to The City of Gold to mine his share and study towards civil engineering. Financial challenges forced him to drop out, which was an experience that motivates his support of social change. He surveys and structures ideologies that have the potential to initiate change through his music, photography and digital design work. One of his captions that stands out is, a gona letshogo, meaning we are fearless. This exhibition showcases the fearless and empowers the South African youth to Rise.
Zito’s choice of mixed media in his use of collage, mirrors the diversity found on today’s political landscape. He collaborates with photographers George Kambwiri & Nonkululeko Chabalala to include contemporary images taken at #FEESMUSTFALL and other protests.
RISE’s agenda does not extend to any political campaign. Zito is not choosing sides. Instead, this body of work is on the side of participation and awareness. It motivates active citizenship by welcoming South African activism into pop culture.
Join the Umuzi community at June First Thursdays in Braamfontein between 18:00 and 21:00 for another engaging exhibition that supports local art.
